What is the first thing we run to when a drink is spilled on the floor? A mop of course. That works, right?  Well let’s take a look at what is really happening here. We grab our mop and use it to evenly distribute that drink, or whatever it is,  over a wider radius, simply diluting it some, while at the same time, applying a thin layer of this murky, swamp like fluid  on top. Well it smells better, so that means something, right? Not exactly! Sure we get some bleach or pine scented stuff or even citrus smell good. We even use clean water just like the picture to your left. So why then doesn’t this work?

The Sink Method

Well first off, most of the time we don’t even bother getting the bucket out, instead we just fill it in the kitchen/utility sink, like the picture to the right, and go from there, We obviously wet the mop, because a dry mop doesn’t absorb anything, and if it’s a sticky soft drink, mud or grease, all we are going to do is smear that substance around. Have you ever noticed how dirty your mop head looks? Think about it as a shirt. Would you wear it? I’d say everyone answers no to this one! Its because we never clean our mops in the first place, we just continue to dip them in that disgusting murky water and continue to spread it all over our floor.

Commercial Mop Bucket

The painful reality is, traditional methods don’t actually clean or sanitize your floors. It doesn’t matter if it is then newest mop on the market or even a commercial grade mop like pictured to the left. All you are doing is pushing around dirt, oil, grease, grime, and germs and dropping it in every grout line that you pass. This is why your grout lines appear darker than when they were first installed, or why your tile still seems sticky even after you have mopped. The stickiness is soap residue left over because it wasn’t extracted properly and then rinsed clean and extracted again to dry. We all know what soap does. It attracts more dirt, grease, oil, and bacteria. That’s why we use it to wash our clothes and dishes, however they get rinsed clean, unlike our floors.

Now, lets take a look at what is really happening when we run that nasty old mop across our floors. As the mop is drug around, it is picking up some of the dirt, grime, and germs that are already present on the floor. Many of these include disgusting gunk such as fecal matter if you have pets, and all the soil you have picked up walking throughout the day, like sidewalks, and public restrooms. You don’t even want to know what’s on the floor there! Now when we track that in our house we pay it no mind, because most of the time we cant see anything but the dirt and grease. As we spread that around with our mop and dip it in the water, all we are doing is diluting it and spreading it throughout the grout lines, cracks, and crevices in all of the rough surfaces. We dip the mop again and continue the vicious cycle.

How many of us run around the house barefooted? I’d say almost everyone. So all those germs that we have spread around, all the gunk, fecal matter, grease and grime of everyday life simply thrives. The few germs that did die, before the water was so dirty it became ineffective, don’t need to worry because the others now have a breeding ground to replenish. We walk through this invisible germ pool everyday not realizing it. Dirty floors mean dirty feet. Our feet, like the rest of our skin, is porous. So who know what we are sucking up into our body causing us to get sick. These germs cause foul odors as well. Ever noticed how it smells good for about 10-20 minutes after you mop then it’s gone? The cleaner you used, simply masked the smell for a bit, but didn’t eliminate the source.  So what is the answer?
